  • There is no such thing as making “enough” money under the chicago-school dominated business thought. A business should always make as much money as it can for its investors, always. A friend who read Friedman’s works says that the Friedman doctrine makes room to say that a wise business will optimize investor outcomes by investing in its product, workforce, and other smart long-term choices, but in practice, nobody ever reads that deep into the Friedman doctrine. It’s just “philosophical” license to make (and demand, on the part of investors) the shallowest slash-and-burn business decisions possible to make line go up NOW. I will accept arguments about how it’s capitalism, but I’d like to point out that we experienced a very distinct culture shift in business leadership starting around the time that Chicago school thought became all the rage.

  • VS Code. It’s dead easy to use, has a ton of useful plugins, and it’s customizable while also being enjoyable to use right out of the box.

For AI assisted coding, I use Cody or GPT-4 data analysis on my personal projects. I tried copilot and found that it actually made my productivity worse. Often as not, I found myself stopping and second guessing whether I was stupid or if it was copilot, and it was usually copilot. GPT-4 is really great for problem solving a specific problem or getting some feedback on some bad smelling code, and Cody works great for helping to write my code faster.

  • I think one of the biggest things we can do is identify ways to fight bots. One thing has become clear to me, and that’s that Reddit and Twitter are stuffed to the gills with bots and professional trolls. I haven’t seen a small fraction of the rage engagement here that I did on Reddit, and I’m guessing that the reason alt-right and other extremist messages echo so hard on these platforms is that they really drive rage engagement. These platforms eat it up, because any engagement is good engagement. I worry that Threads will represent an absolute Tsunami of bot-driven garbage and ragebait being broadcast to federated servers.
