I know it’s not technically “self” hosted but I’d get a cheap yearly VPS somewhere and run a webserver off of that.For me its worth the peace of mind to keep my network a temple instead of a bus terminal. I paid $13 usd for the year for mine

Depending on your budget I highly suggest controlling your own domain and pointing the DNS that way. I’ve ran into problems with every free DNS thing since the beginning of the web. There’s all sorts of fun TLDs and they often go on sale for cheap
In general I think people are too eager to block and defederate for little to no reason other than disagreement. There are exceptions but as far as a normal conversation it’s an overreaction and the antithesis of federating anyway. We already have plenty of siloed walled gardens that are echo chambers.
