Is this a better spot to post issues like this?
Fwiw. I’m on Mastodon and Firefly amd honestly they are pretty much the same. One had more features, ones more stripped down, but it’s still just share some words, maybe a photo or video & post, the people like, reblog, share, or comment/reply.
I don’t feel the need for longer post, rich text, or 1000 emoji reactions so I stuck with Mastodon.
And Lemmy/Kbin is scratching my Reddit itch, especially as I’m working hard to build an alternative music community here.
If you are into photos more, there’s also Pixelfed.
What’s great about Mastodon and Lemmy specifically though? The apps. Both have a ton! I’m on Mona for Mastodon and Memmy for Lemmy and it’s really made all the difference.
Finally - don’t worry about mastodon.art - they aggressively defederate from everyone all the time.
Dead?? Goodness - I love Lemmy and I’m working hard on the community I’m building but Mastodon is jamming! I’ve got like 200k followers on IG and only about 700 followers on Mastodon and the convos and engagements blow away IG!
My thing is follow follow follow and then favorite, reblog, and reply! Been amazing.
no, did calckey for a bit (now firefish) which I think was based on misskey. It’s nice, basically a rich-text with lots of emoji reaction support etc expansion of Mastodon in many ways.
In the end, found the more simple approach of Mastodon my speed.
Personally, I’m happy with both. Lemmy and Mastodon are far from perfect and both feel sorta beta, though Mastodon is further along.
Search is weak on both platforms, imo, but I expect it will improve eventually.
You mention favorite counts only being your instance, but same is true for community subscribers here.
Also landing on other instances from outside links can be confusing to find the same content in your instance (Mastodon and Lemmy).
Federation does make things more complicated. But it beats centralization.
In the end, it comes down to your personal end use and preferences.
Personally, I like Mastodon for conversations and I like Lemmy for community building - I mod !alternativenation@lemmy.world - and that works for me. 💕
(Though I’d kill for some consistent performance from Lemmy after trying to comment 3 times)
Most rebrands keep an element of the original or adopt how the customer refers to it. Think Dunkin dropping “Donuts” and Kentucky Friend Chicken becoming KFC.
All good.
But for Dunkin Donuts to suddenly rename itself “Place” - not so good.
Why are you talking as if “mastodon” is some singular entity? There’s like thousands of mastodons running around.
yisssssss having lots of fun in there! new, old, in between alternative fun!
On reddit though, there are thousand of music communities. How did you know which was the right one? Subscriber count.
it’s okay though, it’s early days, pretty sure some communities in some instances will be the main one. You’ll see the user counts and active users to help guide you. And maybe there WILL be two mains for the same topic - is that bad? If 2 general music communities both have huge active users, just subscribe to both! easy peasy!
I’ve subscribed to a few dupes here, it’s all gravy. And I’m doing my best to nurture an alternative music community. =)
agreed that the instance name should be clear, as well as the user & active user numbers to help guide people.
Heckin’ yeah!
the same is true with reddit. They may not have the exact same name, but how many music subreddits are there? I follow at least 5 or 6 on reddit, but there are thousands, many of which compete for the same or sim genres or ideas, but a few tend to be the one people gravitate too and so be it.
I run Alternative Nation here !alternativenation@lemmy.world but on reddit here are 3 of many options, but clearly on reddit indieheads got the users.
to be fair, you can make “infinite” subreddits too. I can make showerthought, thoughtswhileshowering, deepthoughts, jackhandy, etc, etc right now.
clearly in your screenshot, one has risen to the top, so there you go, check done.
Personally I can’t make the new themes stick. I do the change, save, and boom back to the grey default.
who’s crying? lol As I wrote in the article, I’m already on IG, already sold my soul to Meta, have a large following, so figured I could do the lord’s work and spread the good word about the fediverse AND share what’s going on there back here to the Fediverse to help with any FOMO some y’all are totally feeling.
Agreed! Less pressure or need to scale. Even if growth stopped today, we have millions of people to interact with!
