  • On the internet? In general I take someone that spells “God” with a capital to be a theist (usually only 2 of 3 monotheistic believes, because Muslims usually use “Allah” probably). Or perhaps raised as a theist, lost their faith, but not bitter against their old faith. while if someone uses “god” they are probably not a theist.

Makes sense to me too: I as a theist would refer to “Thor” as a “god” because to me it is not an entity that exists. It would only make sense for someone that is an atheist to not use a capital to refer to my “God”: They don’t believe it to be a real entity after all.

E: although, I guess fictional characters do use capitals, so maybe I’m wrong.

  • About a year ago, I started buying DVD’s from thrift stores. I rip them all and put them on my Plex server. I recently aquired a Bluray player and starting to collect those too. Since those take up MUCH more diskspace, I only watch bluray with the physical disk (storage in Europe is unfortunately more expensive than in the USA)

I also started collecting CD’s again (mostly from thrift stores too). I rip these to FLAC and also put them on my Plex.

The beauty of this system for me is that I still have to physically flip through stuff to build my collection. Since it takes up physical space, I limit myself to stuff I actually really want to see/listen to. But by digitizing it, I have the advantage of having acces to that curated content everywhere. The added timesink of ripping and metadata correcting gives me more satisfaction and appreciation for what I bought. A sense of pride and accomplishment, if you will.

So I buy Physical to make sure the collection stays curated and manageable, but digitize most of it for the convenience.

Due to the appreciation of my collection, I now watch more movies and listen to more music than when I had acces to netflix or Spotify.

  • This.

It is planned feature for Gimp 3 I believe, hopefully it will be implemented well.

But for now, people that aren’t professional graphic designers should really stop recommending Gimp as a viable replacement. It is a very capable piece of software, but too many professional-grade features are missing.

And it’s never only about Photoshop either. It is the integration that the suite has. Illustrator to Photoshop to Indesign is (mostly) seemless.

I’m currently trying to switch to foss alternatives, but it’s rough.

  • I think it’s because our brain can’t really focus on both content and spelling at the same time. You can only really check either the message or the spelling at one time when you are the author.

When you check the message/content of your post, you look at every sentence and ask yourself: does it convey my point? Did I choose the right words?

When you check spelling, you should check word by word without looking at the meaning(unless spelling depends on it). Since you know what’s coming next in your story, you’re probably just rushing through the sentences. You’ll miss stuff because you don’t read every word. It is the classic “the the” problem where the same word is shown twice in a sentence, but you miss it because you only fastread it.

Also, spell check last. If you spellcheck first and then do some rewriting, the new stuff will have a high chance of spelling errors.

  • Slightly unrelated, but one of my recommendations would be to buy a VPN for a month and download all the movies instead of ripping DVDs. Unless you care about the extras of course.

I’ve recently digitized my DVD collection with MakeMKV(best tool for this) and boy is it hit and miss quality wise. Some are very watchable on a 1080p tv, while others look like a pixel mess. And I’m not that much of a purist when it comes to quality. But DVD is 480p (which is watchable) but when the movie is made from a VHS copy (which happened sometimes back then) it is… an unpleasant watching experience

Also, mpeg2(which dvds are encoded in) are huge filesize wise for what quality they offer. AND mpeg2 is not supported by stuff like a chromecast…so not great.

I, as a European, had double trouble: our PAL dvd movies actually run slightly faster than American dvd’s, so most subs found online simply won’t synchronize. So that meant ripping the subs, converting them to a sensible format, finding all the spelling mistakes from converting… A pain.

If I’d do it over again, I’d pay 5 bucks for a VPN and download some bluray rips. Even stuff that is deemed low quality by the pirate community (YIFY rips) are better AND 1/4th the size than your DVD rips will ever be.

You could go the ISO route, which preserves the menus. You can open ISO files with Kodi.

Or rip your dvds if you want to make sure it’s all legal. You do you 😜

  • In our primary schools, we learn our children mili, deci, centi, deca, hecto and kilo, and how to calculate between them.

Beyond that or below that is used either in science classes or specific usecases and not known by the whole population at large.

Since people use what they know, they’d never use mega as a common way of measuring. We mostly use km for distance, and only in specific cases we might use, say, hectometers or decameters.

5 megameter is not wrong, but I don’t call 34 cm 3,4 decimeters either(unless decimeters make sense of course :p)
