I thought Patrick Boyle was a rap specialist music major?
I thought Patrick Boyle was a rap specialist music major?
First hit on Google was this list made by some Redditor: https://www.reddit.com/r/Betamax/comments/z8cun4/films_that_only_exist_on_betamax_or_alt_editions/
In any case: the big advantage of Betamax (and VHS) was how easy it was to get home-recordings done. An entire generation of family photos / family events (birthday parties, etc. etc.) are on Betamax and likely lost.

Flash still got it good.
Consider the entire generation of 1970s and 1980s Betamax footage that is basically lost today.
When format wars snap to one side: VHS vs Betamax, HD-DVD vs BluRay, Flash vs HTML5, QuickTime vs DivX… The losing side basically loses a ton of footage.
For the most part, we know how to play Flash right now and mostly how to upconvert it or otherwise archive it. That’s not true of all formats.
If Elon fucks it all to hell they’ll break the company into pieces, sell the various pieces to other auto manufacturers and life will move on
You mean like Delorian? Or Fisker Ocean?
Nah man. When a car company goes under, they’re dead. We know what it looks like. Otherwise, the #1 car recommend should be Fisker Ocean since its like $25k per car right now. But we all know that company is dead and no one will buy it out of bankruptcy, save those cars, or offer services (or parts) on those cars moving forward.
Same thing if Tesla ever collapses. At best maybe some patents get bought out but no one will want to be left paying the bill and supporting the (now screwed) customer base.
A bunch of auto manufacturers are switching their primary port, that’s another way of fucking your charging network
I don’t think you realize how much Elon fucked over Superchargers with the firing.
There were projects with $50,000+ to $300k amounts put up by local businesses as they prepared for Tesla Superchargers to be installed in their parking lots earlier this year.
These businesses have gotten ZERO emails, phone or any other communication from Tesla. Why? Because the company fired everyone. Everyone involved in Superchargers is gone. That’s no more build out, no more maintenance, no more nothing.
Presumably Elon will figure out (eventually) that this is a bad idea. But then what? He already betrayed a huge number of business customers. Who will want to install new Superchargers in their business after this misstep?
Like I get it. Tesla is losing money and they needed to fire people to keep going. But its not a good look.
Hyundai Ioniq 5 or Ioniq6 seems to be the dumbest EV (dumb in a good way).
I would suggest most people get a PHEV, like the Prius Prime though.
The charger network: Superchargers are so much more plentiful than the alternatives, and there’s still not a great central charging app. I have 3 different ones installed on my phone and honestly most of them suck besides Tesla’s. Non-tesla chargers are basically just at apartments, businesses, and malls. Very few of which actually help me
Good thing Elon Musk fired the entire Supercharger team then.
Yes, Elon is a massive piece of shit. You know who else is? Every auto exec. The only difference is that they’re quiet and effective. Those old money fucks have done so much more harm to our planet because they know how to influence politics effectively. Something something, ethical consumption, something, something, capitalism
Other autodealers aren’t fucking their own company over by destroying the top reason you listed for buying their cars. We’re well into the point where its clear that Elon is a terrible businessman not just morally, but also for you as the Tesla customer. There’s no way Superchargers can be maintained (let alone expand) if the team is gone.
25GB and 50GB disks written at blistering 10MB/s in the age of 100MB/s Gigabit Internet connected to storage (S3, Backblaze, etc. etc.) means that networks have completely obsoleted Blu Rays.
I’m surprised they still found a use of these things. Flash drives are also so much cheaper, faster, and more convenient.
It got worse.

As it turns out, Elon Musk had a bunch of farms + horses from all the land he bought in the 2022-era. Elon Musk was actively trying to get rid of horses on his new property.
Its not that Elon Musk was going to “buy her a horse”. He had tons of spare horses and was looking to dump them onto someone else.
Ex: The movie Primer. A good time-travel idea in a bad movie.
You need to see the new Wily Wonka movie. (Probably a 7/10 movie, good songs, kind of bad plot but enjoyable)
But yeah, stealing Cocoa beans from Oompa-Loompas is a big plot point. And… Oompa Loompas stealing it back is also a thing.
It’s len(str) in Python. Not str.length.
Is it wrong that I’m stuck trying to figure out what language this is?
Trying to figure out what string.length and print(var) exist in a single language… Not Java, not C# (I’m pretty sure its .Length, not length), certainly not C, C++ or Python, Pascal, Schme or Haskell or Javascript or PHP.
We can go all 1700s on you and meme with bad spellings for obscure meanings.
Like how oll komplete can become OK. But at some point, a really old meme is ‘just language’…
So disappointing Glover hasn’t actually been Prowler yet
Ummmm… spoilers but… Glover has been Prowler. (Not your Prowler though).
No. In the world of business, there’s an acknowledgement that its sometimes best for a project to NOT get done, rather than being the bagholder (ie: the one stuck doing the hard unappreciated work that no one else wants to do).
Its a common occurrence. “This would be great if someone did X job”, but it doesn’t mean YOU should do it, especially if you are working for a team or other group. If I am the team-lead of 100 programmers, its my job to make sure that we have 100 (or more) jobs available so that everyone remains employed. Getting us stuck doing difficult, long, unappreciated work is the fastest way that we all get fired.
Its better to do things 'the hard way", that’s selfishly (for us 100 people) beneficial, rather than doing things to the benefit of greater society. And programming is actually full of this situation.
Now yes, this leads to the whole world depending upon the heroic efforts of 2x open source developers who have been nearly unpaid for the past two decades to develop OpenSSL or whatever, but… that’s how it works sometimes. When you’re a team lead in charge of keeping a group of 100 (or 1000) healthy and full of work to do, you can’t just be doing things “for the benefit of overall society”, people are literally relying upon you to be cutthroat on behalf of them and get benefits to your own team.
Now what you’re supposed to do, is make a clear and convincing case to your superiors: the people in control of departments of 1000 or 10,000 people. You point out that “Hey, we’re fighting 100 vs 100 down here. But if you give us the money in XYZ ways, then we can better cooperate as a group”, then its now the responsibility of your boss to make sure that the job gets done.
If whatever you’re doing is to the benefit of multiple companies (ex: OpenGL is to the benefit of AMD/Intel/NVidia), you are supposed to split and create a new non-profit organization with split-control (different board members from AMD, Intel, and NVidia all sitting on the board) that develops the standard that benefits all three. Then, you get that organization to hire / develop the OpenGL or Vulkan work that everyone benefits from.
But if you’re say, an AMD developer… its a bad idea to just develop OpenGL by yourself (and let Intel / NVidia profit off of AMD’s hard work). There’s give and take here, and your competitors are also cutthroat. The Khronos Group exists purely as a political device to help these companies work together more closely, and that’s the only way that long-term sustainability between rival groups can really work together.
Universal Paperclips is one of the best clicker games.
In particular: because it isn’t a clicker game. It only starts off as one. There’s only about 2 sections IIRC that are “clicker”, the start (before auto-clippers kick in), and then the quantum computer.
I guess you have to launch your first 20 or 30 probes at the space stage and that’s done one-click-at-a-time… but I don’t think that counts as a “clicker” game since its so few clicks in the great scheme of things. At no other point is rapid-clicking that useful.
